When to comes to remodeling your home, you have your work cut out for you. There’s a lot to be done, and unless you’re a carpenter, you’re probably under prepared to do the work that needs to be done. Therefore, your first choice may just be your biggest and most important choice, and that’s whether your want to take the Do It Yourself (DIY) approach or simply hire professionals instead. And, so, I offer up the following analysis of both choices to help you decide.
First and foremost, let’s consider the DIY approach in greater detail. When it comes to cost, DIY is hard to beat. After all, you’re only paying for materials, and building materials are surprisingly cost effective. When you pay the pros, you’re mostly paying for the labor, with the materials being a secondary cost. Therefore, you stand to save quite a lot by doing it yourself. Of course, the biggest draw back of DIY is your lack of experience unless, again, you’re a carpenter at your day job. While this is not insurmountable, it can be difficulty to learn the new skills you’ll need in order to remodel your home. To learn any new skill, you’re going to have to spend some time studying. Luckily, YouTube and other online resources make this much easier and more affordable than it was in the past. Therefore, you can learn only the skills you need, and much faster, without leaving your home. Meaning, simply, you can oscillate between the research and the task and take a follow along sort of approach. Then, there’s the matter of time. The DIY approach is inherently time consuming, as you’ll have a relatively small team working on the project, and that’s on top of the time involved in learning the necessary skills.
Professionals, as you might imagine, differ greatly from laymen. The first point we’ll be discussing is the cost. Pros will cost you much more than DIY, as you’re paying for the time consuming and skill requiring labor. This is not a con, per se, as you are paying for skill and experience. Therefore, the job will be done much better and quicker by pros than by yourself. Carpenters are highly trained, as this is their job, so you won’t have to worry too much about quality. You won’t have to worry about time for the same reason. Pros tend to have a decent sized team, and each of them can move faster and make less mistakes. Don’t forget that simply not doing the work yourself means that you don’t have to, and preferably won’t, be around the house, so you can book a flight with CheapOair and take a little vacation.
